Gary’s Apple Crumble Recipe

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 4 large (6 medium) red sweet apples (Gala, Fuji, or Pink Lady), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 1 tsp (5ml) ground cinnamon

  • ½ tsp (2ml) ground ginger

  • 3 tbsp (45ml) granulated sugar

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • Juice of 1 lemon

  • 1 tbsp (15ml) butter (for par-cooking).

For the Crumble Topping:

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar.

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour.

  • A pinch of salt.

  • 6 tbsp (85g) cold butter, diced.

  • ½ cup (50g) oat-based muesli.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    Set your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish lightly with butter (optional).

  2. Prepare the Filling:

    • Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter.

    • Add the sliced apples, lemon zest, juice, cinnamon, ginger, and granulated sugar.

    • Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are softened but not mushy.

    • Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.

  3. Make the Crumble Topping:

    • In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, and salt. Add the cold diced butter.

    • Rub the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    • Stir in the oat-based muesli for texture.

  4. Assemble:
    Evenly distribute the crumble topping over the apples.

  5. Bake:
    Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  6. Cool and Serve:
    Let the crumble cool slightly before serving with your favorite accompaniment.
